Bluebot vs. Phyn Plus: Clamp-On Monitoring vs. Inline Shutoff

Share this:

Phyn Plus (now sold as Phyn Protect) is an inline device, plumbed into your main water line, that Phyn says can shut the water off automatically. Bluebot, sold as the Bluebot Mini and Bluebot Hero, is a clamp-on smart water meter that attaches to the outside of the pipe with no cutting and alerts you to leaks and unusual use, but does not close a valve. The right choice depends on whether you need automatic shutoff or a monitor you can install yourself on any supported line, including irrigation.

This page is one of our Bluebot vs. other smart water meters comparisons. Bluebot publishes it and sells the meters compared here. Below, we compare how each device measures flow, installs, fits your plumbing, handles irrigation, connects and costs over 3 years.

Bluebot vs. Phyn Plus at a Glance

Phyn Plus is installed inline on the main water line and can close its built-in valve. Bluebot clamps onto the outside of the pipe, measures flow and sends alerts without closing a valve.

Phyn specs last verified: October 13, 2026, from the Phyn Plus Smart Water Assistant + Shutoff (2nd Gen) product page (2026) and the Phyn Protect FAQ (2026). Phyn’s Phyn Protect page (2026) now reads “Phyn Plus is now Phyn Protect” at the same listed price, so this page keeps the Phyn Plus name that searches and reviews still use.

Monitoring and Alerts vs. Automatic Shutoff: The Core Difference

Phyn Plus puts monitoring and a shutoff valve in the same unit. According to Phyn’s Phyn Plus product page (2026), the built-in valve gives you remote shutoff from the Phyn app, and Phyn Plus can turn the water off automatically in the event of a leak once it has learned how your home normally uses water.

Bluebot does one job: it measures flow and sends you a real-time leak alert through the bluebot Water app. It deliberately does not close a valve, so you act on the alert. That choice is what lets the meter clamp onto the outside of any supported pipe.

These are different jobs, not better and worse. A Bluebot meter tells you what the water is doing and leaves the decision to you. Phyn Plus can act for you, and it does that from inside your main. Here is where each approach matters most:

  • A home left empty for long stretches favors automatic shutoff, because nobody is there to act on an alert.
  • A renter or condo owner who cannot modify plumbing favors a clamp-on monitor, which needs no cutting and can be removed later.
  • Someone who wants to watch an irrigation line separately favors a clamp-on monitor, which can sit on that line on its own.

How Each Device Measures Water Flow

Bluebot. Bluebot uses clamp-on transit-time ultrasonic flow sensing, which measures flow through the pipe wall, so the meter never touches the water. Patented robotic servo technology positions the sensor automatically during setup, and Adaptive Angle Technology self-adjusts the sensor angle.

In the field, the Bluebot Hero reads 98%-99% of the flow reading (typically +/-1% to +/-2%) and detects flow as low as 0.1 GPM. The Bluebot Mini reads 95%-97% (typically +/-3% to +/-5%) and detects flow down to 0.3 GPM. Results vary with pipe material and size, installation quality and straight-pipe length. Each meter is individually calibrated against NIST-traceable standards and ships with its own Calibration Certificate.

Phyn Plus. According to Phyn’s technology page (2026), Phyn samples the pressure in your plumbing 240 times every second. Phyn’s Phyn Plus Difference page (2026) adds that the unit relies on an in-line ultrasonic flow meter custom-built by Badger Meter, with no moving parts. So both devices use ultrasonic sensing: the Phyn device carries its sensor inside the pipe, and Bluebot’s clamps on the outside. The Phyn pages cited here print no accuracy figure, so this page states none.

Accuracy numbers are only comparable when you know how each was measured, so buyers comparing any meters can ask each maker for calibration documentation.

Installation: Clamp-On Meter vs. Inline Plumbing

Bluebot installs on the outside of the pipe, so nothing is cut and no plumber is needed. An inline install, like Phyn Plus, cuts the main where the unit goes.

The clamp-on install with no pipe cutting takes about 10 minutes with the app, which walks you through six steps:

  1. Run a site survey of the install spot.
  2. Set up the network connection.
  3. Choose the pipe material and size.
  4. Mount the meter.
  5. Let the robotic sensor position itself and configure the pipe automatically.
  6. Run the system check.

Bluebot needs a clean straight run of pipe (3.5 inches for the Mini meter, 4.0 inches for the Hero meter), horizontal or vertical runs, a strong Wi-Fi signal at the install spot (typical indoor range is about 30 feet), and a power outlet for the included USB power adapter. Because nothing is cut, the meter can be removed later, which suits renters and temporary monitoring.

For Phyn Plus, Phyn’s product page FAQ (2026) says the unit goes on the main water line right after your water meter or where the water enters your home, and that “the main water line to your home will be cut where Phyn Plus is installed.” Phyn recommends a licensed plumber, lists a typical install of one to two hours, and says you can hire your own plumber.

The Phyn unit has 1 inch NPSM male threaded ends, adapters are not included, and Phyn lists Wi-Fi at the install location and an outlet within 12 feet. Phyn does not print a plumber labor price on these pages, so get a quote from a licensed plumber.

Pipe Size and Material Compatibility

DevicePipe sizes and materials
50-W (Bluebot Mini)3/4 inch and 1 inch; copper (Type L and M), PVC (Schedule 40 and 80), PEX and galvanized steel. It does not support CPVC, PE or stainless steel.
100-W (Bluebot Hero)Supports 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch; adds CPVC, PE and stainless steel. The Hero covers more than 80 pipe size and material combinations.
Bluebot Hero Prime2-1/2, 3 and 4 inch.
Phyn Plus (2nd Gen)Phyn recommends mains no larger than 1-1/4 inches, with 1 inch NPSM male threaded ends. Adapters are not included, and a 1 inch NPS to NPT adapter may be needed.

Phyn’s help center, which now describes the device as Phyn Protect, lists PEX, copper and PVC (2026) as the materials its fittings are designed for. Phyn lists XL models for 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inch and 2 inch mains as “Coming Soon” as of October 13, 2026. Before buying either device, check your main line size and material.

Monitoring Irrigation Lines and Outdoor Pipes

Every Bluebot meter is suitable for irrigation. The Bluebot Mini is rated IP68, and its compact size suits irrigation valve boxes and outdoor plumbing. The Bluebot Hero is rated IP65, installs indoors or outdoors, and suits irrigation main lines. Both measure flow in either direction, and the operating temperature range is 32°F to 122°F (0°C to 50°C).

Because a clamp-on meter goes on any supported line, a second Bluebot can watch the irrigation line on its own, separate from the house.

A single inline unit measures whatever flows through the point where it is plumbed. Phyn’s product page FAQ (2026) says irrigation is monitored if Phyn Plus can be installed before the irrigation lines. Phyn’s warranty page (2026) also says products installed on anything other than potable water service lines, with irrigation lines as an example, are not covered by its limited warranty. For example, if a sprinkler line branches off the main upstream of a Phyn Plus, that line needs a second device, and a Bluebot Mini in the valve box can do that job.

Connectivity, Power and Apps

  • Bluebot: The Bluebot Mini and Bluebot Hero include built-in 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and connect directly to the Bluebot Cloud with no gateway, with unlimited devices and installation locations per account. Alerts and history live in the bluebot Water app (iOS and Android) and the FloDash(TM) web dashboard. USB-C power is 5 VDC with a 110 VAC adapter included and no batteries required, and the meter reconnects and resumes on its own when power returns. For sites without reliable Wi-Fi, the 100-WAN (Bluebot ProLink) uses LoRaWAN and requires a separate Bluebot Gateway, with a range of up to about 1.2 miles in urban settings and up to 10 miles with clear line of sight.
  • Phyn Plus: Phyn’s Phyn Plus product page (2026) lists Wi-Fi at 2.4 GHz (802.11 b/g/n) and a free Phyn app for iOS and Android that sends SMS or push notifications, and says Phyn Plus works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, plus IFTTT. It needs an outlet within 12 feet. If power is lost, Phyn says the unit stays in the valve state it was in, and a manual shutoff tool on the mounting bracket works the valve.

Cost of Ownership: Hardware, Labor and Data Plans

As of October 13, 2026, Phyn lists Phyn Plus at $579.99 with no subscription fee, while the Bluebot Mini is $258.76 and the Bluebot Hero is $558.34, both including 12 months of data. The sticker price is not the whole cost, so here is each term for the Bluebot meters. Prices include prepaid data and come from bluebot.com/shop, captured October 13, 2026.

Term50-W (Bluebot Mini)100-W (Bluebot Hero)
1 year$258.76$558.34
2 years$288.67$604.62
3 years$338.48$637.43

Each price is billed once at checkout for that term, and the first year of premium data is included. From year two, continued data is optional at $4.98/month through the data plan, and renewal is not mandatory. There is no plumber cost to install a Bluebot meter.

For Phyn Plus, Phyn’s Phyn Plus product page (2026) lists $579.99 as of October 13, 2026, and no optional plan. Phyn’s Phyn Plus Difference page (2026) says it does not charge a fee to access your water use data, and its warranty page (2026) lists a two-year limited warranty. Phyn recommends a licensed plumber and lists one to two hours for a typical install but prints no labor price, so ask local plumbers for a quote.

Bluebot or Phyn Plus: Which Fits Your Plumbing?

Phyn Plus fits owners of single-family homes who want an inline valve that closes the water itself. Bluebot, from the compact Bluebot Mini to the Hero, fits renters, condo owners and anyone who wants a meter on an irrigation or branch line, with no cutting.

Phyn Plus may suit you if:

  • You want automatic shutoff built in.
  • You own the home and are comfortable with inline plumbing work.
  • Your main is a size Phyn supports (1-1/4 inch or smaller).
  • You live in a single-family home or townhome with its own plumbing, the fit Phyn describes.

Bluebot may suit you if:

  • You cannot or do not want to cut into the main, as with renters and condo owners.
  • You want to watch an irrigation or branch line on its own.
  • Your main is larger than 2 inches (Bluebot Hero Prime) or your property spans several buildings (Bluebot ProLink with a gateway).
  • You want a meter you can move later.

If you are weighing a Phyn alternative because cutting the main is not an option, Bluebot installs without it. If automatic shutoff is a must-have, Bluebot alone does not provide it. The two can also work together: a clamp-on meter on an irrigation line next to an inline unit on the main is one option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Phyn Protect the same as Phyn Plus?

Phyn presents it as the same product under a new name. Phyn’s Phyn Protect page (2026) reads “Phyn Plus is now Phyn Protect” and describes the same whole-home water monitoring and leak protection with a new name and updated look, at the same $579.99 listed price as of October 13, 2026. Phyn does not say whether the hardware changed, so the Phyn Plus details on this page describe the device Phyn now sells as Phyn Protect.

Does Phyn Plus require a plumber to install?

Phyn recommends a licensed plumber, because the main water line is cut where the unit is installed. It lists a typical install of one to two hours and says you can hire your own plumber. Bluebot clamps onto the outside of the pipe instead, with no cutting, no water shutoff and no plumber required. Plumber labor prices vary, so ask local plumbers for a quote.

Can Bluebot shut off my water automatically?

No. Bluebot measures flow and sends real-time alerts through the bluebot Water app, and a person decides whether to close the main. That is deliberate, and it is what lets the meter clamp onto the outside of any supported pipe. If automatic shutoff is a must-have, Phyn lists a built-in valve on its unit, and the two can be used together.

Is Bluebot a good Phyn Plus alternative for renters?

Bluebot suits renters who cannot modify plumbing, because it clamps onto the outside of the pipe with no cutting, no water shutoff and no plumber, and it can be removed later. It alerts you to leaks and unusual use but does not close a valve. Check your lease for any rules on installing devices.

How is Phyn Plus different from Flume?

It is installed inline on the main water line and can close its built-in valve, while Flume is a monitor that straps onto your utility’s water meter instead. Our Bluebot vs Flume comparison covers the clamp-on versus meter-reading difference in detail.

What is the difference between Phyn Plus and Moen Flo?

This page compares Bluebot with Phyn, not two competitors with each other. Phyn lists its unit as an inline device with a built-in shutoff valve on the main water line. For Moen’s own specifications, see Moen’s product pages or our Flo by Moen alternatives guide.

Can I use Bluebot and Phyn Plus together?

Yes, as one option. A Bluebot clamp-on meter on an irrigation line or branch line can sit next to a Phyn Plus on the main, so the inline unit can handle shutoff on the house supply while Bluebot reports flow on the separate line. Phyn says the unit monitors irrigation if it is installed before the irrigation lines.

Do I need a subscription for Bluebot?

Not in year one: the first year of premium data is included in the price. From year two, continued premium data is optional at $4.98/month, and renewal is not mandatory. Phyn states it charges no subscription fee to access water use data. As of October 13, 2026, the Bluebot Mini is $258.76 and the Bluebot Hero is $558.34 with 12 months of data.

How accurate is the Bluebot Hero?

In the field, the Bluebot Hero reads 98%-99% of the flow reading, typically within +/-1% to +/-2%, and detects flow as low as 0.1 GPM. Results vary with pipe material and size, installation quality and straight-pipe length. Each meter is individually calibrated to NIST-traceable standards and ships with a Calibration Certificate.
